2018 California Wildfires: What We Can Do to Help

Posted on Nov 15, 2018 2:15:49 PM

The 2018 California Wildfires have devastated both the Northern and Southern parts of the state at record breaking impacts for the second year in a row. In Southern California, the Woosley Fire has had the most devastating effect encroaching in highly populated areas in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties. Ventura specifically was hit hard last year, not only with the fires, but also with a record amount of rainfall that caused even more devastating avalanches and floods displacing many families and lives. The outpour in the community that continues to get ravaged has been tremendous for the local Fire Team for Cal Fire, Ventura County Fire Department, and Los Angeles County Fire Department. The Los Angeles County Fire has urged the community that any public service or donation be referred to their website for contribution or to local charity.

The community that has been hit the hardest are those in very mountainous and dense populations of Malibu and the surrounding areas. Many of these homes contain a vast amount of animals both at the homes and on farmland. Ventura County has 11 major Animal Evacuation Centers, half of which are at capacity. It is estimated that at least 10,000 more wild animals or pets have been displaced from the Woolsey and Hill Fires, both near the Ventura-Los Angeles County line, and the Camp Fire in rural Butte County, about 500 miles to the north. Los Angeles County Animal Care & Control said that about 700 animals, including 550 horses, nine cows and at least one tortoise, are in their care. In neighboring Ventura County, the public shelters have taken in 56 horses, 30 dogs, 25 cats, seven chickens, six rabbits, four goats and a bird by late Monday morning. Many of these shelters run very thin on supplies needed for care, especially for the larger animals that would normally not be in their care. The OnTrac Southern California Operations team including Ventura General Manager Frank Scordia, Ontario General Manager Michael King, and Regional General Manager Michael Kerper spent the day dropping off pallets of water to the Humane Society of Ventura at the horse boarding location in Ventura near the racetrack, as well as donating towels and blankets to the Ventura County Animal Services for the huge influx of animals needed to keep clean and warm. If you would like to help these organizations, please consider visiting their websites for more information. The Humane Society of Ventura County can be found here: https://www.hsvc.org/. If you would like to help the victims of the 2018 California Wildfires, but don’t know how please consider researching the various causes and charitable organizations first to learn how they can use your help. Some organizations are asking for monetary donations only. If supplies and volunteering is how you’d like to help, there are other organizations who are accepting help that way too. The New York Times has published an online article with multiple organizations who are needing help. Here are some statistics of what Southern California has incurred as of Tuesday afternoon, November 13th, 2018:

Since this fire started on Friday, November 9th, 2018, the three major fires that have impacted Ventura County are the Woosley Fire, Hill Fire, and Peak Fire. The Woosley Fire has burned more than 96,314 acres and is still at only 35% containment. This has caused devastation throughout Ventura County and prompted the evacuation of over 260,000 residents, many of which still have not returned to their homes. The Hill Fire has burned over 4,500 acres and is currently at 90% containment. The Peak Fire was set off yesterday and burned 186 acres before quickly contained by Cal Fire, but prompted a shutdown of the 118 freeway for a brief period of time and caused a lot of concern to the residents of Simi Valley. There are 3592 personnel working the fires with 619 fire trucks continuing to battle the blaze that is increasing with the higher winds thru Tuesday afternoon.

OnTrac is proud to have Vice President Mark Magill present at Parcel Forum for the sixth year. This unique event is held for Supply Chain Professionals who are dedicated to parcel fulfillment. Joined with Lasership, Inc. Vice President Seth Pierce, and United Delivery Service Vice President of Sales Dave Meyers, Magill chose this topic to help the greater population of the logistics industry to better understand a complex theory of calculating the return on investment and how a logistics provider of a specific region can improve the bottom line. Magill said, “Working with some of the Fortune 500 companies who have successfully made it through the current retail environment and out the other side as eCommerce giants, I noticed that their sophisticated methodology to determine the ROI for their parcel mix is not common knowledge by all. The goal of this presentation is to decipher those equations, so that each logistics professional can take the tools back to the office and determine if the savings is great enough to include a logistics provider like OnTrac in their overall mix.”

The presentation is titled, “307: Evaluating the ROI of Adding Regionals to the Parcel Carrier Mix” and is taking place on Wednesday, September 26th, 2018 from 12:40pm to 1:30pm. New Relief Pitchers Take a Ride in the OnTrac Bullpen Cart

Posted on Aug 29, 2018 3:21:51 PM

Tuesday, August 2nd marked the trade deadline for the 2018 Major League Baseball season. The Arizona Diamondbacks bolstered their bullpen, and picked up two relief pitchers before the deadline set in.

Brad Ziegler, a veteran right-handed reliever who pitched for Miami was traded to the Diamondbacks on July 31st. Ziegler pitched for Arizona from 2011 to 2016, and had a total Earned Run Average (ERA) of 2.49 in a total of 348 game appearances. The Diamondbacks also picked up Jake Diekman, a left-hander from the Texas Rangers. Diekman was playing in Arizona as a Ranger when the trade went through, so he gathered his things from the visitors’ side, and made his way to the Diamondbacks Clubhouse.

With this new trade, Diekman was found swapping clubhouses mid-series. In order to make this transitions easier, he took a ride in the OnTrac Bullpen Cart. Ready to make his way to his new teammates, Baxter gave Diekman a ride to the DBacks Clubhouse at Chase Field. Use of bullpen carts has slowly increased in popularity this season, and the Diamondbacks were the first to bring back the cart. The D-Backs debuted the OnTrac Bullpen Cart during spring training, and it has become a fan favorite. Diekman’s journey in Arizona is a step towards more use of bullpen carts in Major League Baseball.

Jake Diekman was not the only relief pitcher to use the OnTrac Bullpen Cart after the trade deadline. Brad Ziegler became the first Diamondbacks pitcher to ride in the cart during a regular season game on August 2nd. However, this was not Ziegler’s first time taking a ride in the bullpen cart. On June 1st, Brad Ziegler, then a Marlins reliever, took a ride to the mound in the OnTrac Bullpen Cart while in town to play the D-Backs.

The Diamondbacks made some bold moves before the trade deadline, but ones that are sure to pay off. The use of the OnTrac Bullpen cart by both pitchers was the perfect way to welcome them to the team.

New Facility Opens with 40% Increase in Employees

Posted on Aug 24, 2018 10:51:03 AM

OnTrac has opened the doors to their newest Southern California facility at a grand opening event that took place on June 21st. Approximately 65 guests attended the fiesta-themed event to enjoy Mexican food, watch presentations by OnTrac leadership, City officials and the local Chamber of Commerce. A ribbon cutting ceremony followed the presentations, and after a celebration with confetti guests were invited on a tour of the new building.

BUR 1

One speaker at the event, OnTrac Director of Engineering Jim Brownlow was able to give guests full details of the new building’s material handling systems capabilities. The Sun Valley material handling system was built for efficiency and expansion.  A more efficient system allows for packages to travel through the building and get on the road to their destination much quicker.  The new Sun Valley facility is roughly 250,000 square feet, and provides 6 unload doors and 5 load doors. This allows packages to get unloaded, sorted, on the road, and in the customer’s hands quickly and more efficiently.

BUR 2

In order to accommodate the new loading capabilities, the Primary Source Slide System operates in 5 different ways. This allows sorters to send packages 5 ways throughout the facility. The new material handling system allows for 9,000 packages to be sorted an hour, and that can expand up to 13,000 an hour. 38 motors power 2,700 feet of conveyor, and 5,500 feet of belting throughout the building. That is the equivalent to the length of roughly 24 football fields. With this new system, OnTrac has the capacity to handle the packages we have today, and room for growth in the future.

BUR 4

OnTrac is proud to be a member of the Southern California community and to contribute to the economic growth, job creation and career opportunities in Sun Valley. The number of employees has increased by 40%, totaling in over 100 employees in the Burbank facility. OnTrac is now offering opportunities such as AM and PM Package Handlers and Driver Checkout Clerk at the Sun Valley location. OnTrac Renews SmartWay Transport Partnership for Seventh Year

Posted on Apr 26, 2018 10:21:42 AM

OnTrac begins another year as a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay® Transport Partner in order to reduce their environmental footprint for a seventh consecutive year. With EPA’s SmartWay program, OnTrac is able to measure, benchmark, and improve freight transportation efficiency. Over the seven year history between OnTrac and SmartWay, OnTrac has reduced their total carbon emissions by 45 percent.

LogoSmartWay

OnTrac joined the SmartWay initiative in 2012. In order to maintain the status as a SmartWay partner, OnTrac takes a number of items into consideration and performance data is submitted and evaluated each year. Some of the qualifications have to do with the type of trucks within the OnTrac fleet. All tractor models are 2013 or newer, and the engines are designated to meet U.S. EPA NOx/PM emission requirements. The tractors and trailers are equipped with drag reduction devices like fairing or panels. Mirrors and bumpers also have aerodynamic designs. All tires in the OnTrac fleet are Low Rolling Resistant (LRR) SmartWay certified and improve fuel economy by three percent.

In addition to the SmartWay partnership, OnTrac has found additional ways to reduce their environmental footprint. For example, in 2016 OnTrac began promoting a paperless billing feature, and has resulted in saving over 145,000 sheets of paper being mailed to customers. As for the facilities that OnTrac occupies, there is an energy savings of between 50 to 85 percent from using energy efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting as opposed to the standard incandescent lighting. Based on the LED lighting alone, the West Phoenix OnTrac facility has an approximate annual kilowatt hour (kWh) energy savings of over 344,000, which equates to annual greenhouse gas from over 580,000 miles driven by an average passenger vehicle.

4.26.18 SmartWay Partnership 2018

“OnTrac understands that the future of our business is tied to the well-being of the planet and our local communities,” says OnTrac Corporate Fleet Manager John Day. “We concentrate on resource conservation, and consider the impact that our operations and facilities have on the environment. We continue to seek out new ways to reduce our footprint and to be an example within our industry.”

3rd Annual Relay for Life Event

Posted on Mar 26, 2018 12:00:00 AM

OnTrac surpassed last year’s fundraising total for the American Cancer Society (ACS) at the third annual OnTrac Corporate Relay for Life event. The event was hosted at the OnTrac Corporate Headquarters in Chandler, Arizona on Thursday, March 15, 2018. Similar to previous years, OnTrac employees participated by walking laps around the front of the office building at Continuum Business Park. However, this year the event was open to the public and members of the community joined the 162 participating OnTrac employees by raising awareness and funds to find a cure for cancer.

Realy 1

“As a neighboring business to OnTrac here at Continuum Business Park, our employees couldn’t wait for the opportunity to participate in this event and help the American Cancer Society,” says Brian Stock, senior vice president at Mr. Cooper. “Our team members walked a total of 32 laps to help increase the overall donation from OnTrac in support of this incredible cause. We are grateful for the opportunity to support each other and the community.”

Kicking off the event was a leading lap walked by cancer survivors and caretakers to unite and join together in a celebration of life. The lap was approximately .4 miles and went along the perimeter of a large pond. In order to spark some friendly competition, the employees were divided up into teams of no more than 15 individuals. The winning team walking a total of 120 laps, or 48 miles. OnTrac welcomed an individual from the community who walked 33 laps, completing the equivalent of a half marathon in the four hour time period.

The American Cancer Society also attended the event and joined in on the fun to help spread the word on cancer prevention. “I am one of the cancer survivors here at OnTrac and being a part of a special day like this is a great reminder how important it is to support one another in the community and at your place of work,” says OnTrac Vice President of Human Resources Dan Cronk. “Hopefully, by having the American Cancer Society here and spreading awareness to their cause, it will give others a greater sense of hope to fight the disease if they or a loved one is impacted.”

The total number of laps completed were 820, which equaled 328 total miles walked. Based on $2 per lap, $1640 was donated to ACS for cancer research.
