Join OnTrac for the 3rd Annual Corporate Relay For Life Event

OnTrac is announcing their partnership with the American Cancer Society (ACS) for the third year in a row. Since 2016, OnTrac has teamed up with ACS to host a Relay For Life event at the corporate office in Chandler, Arizona. Within the past two years, this event has raised over $10,000 in donations that help fund cancer research, education, prevention efforts as well as free information and services for cancer patients. OnTrac is excited to join ACS in their mission to “save lives, celebrate life, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.” The event is taking place on Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 10am to 2pm at 2501 South Price Road, Chandler, AZ 85286 and is open to the community.

The OnTrac Relay For Life event starts at 10am with a leading lap celebration for cancer survivors and caretakers. The walking path is the exterior of the Continuum Business Park and is approximately one mile long. A picnic style lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs will be served for each participant. Expect a day filled with camaraderie along with celebrating survivors and honoring loved ones lost.

As a team, OnTrac is hoping to pass the amount of miles that were walked in previous years, which were 356 miles in 2017 and 377 miles in 2016. Based on the amount of miles or laps walked, OnTrac will make a donation to the American Cancer Society. The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) Honors OnTrac at Expansion Celebration

OnTrac has witnessed significant growth in Northern Nevada. Announced in early October, OnTrac had 200 available positions at the Sparks, Nevada facility and plans have been put in place to expand the current facility into a hub, which is over 150,000 square feet. The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) recognized this positive change created by OnTrac in Northern Nevada and honored the company at the annual New and Expanded Companies Event. 

The event took place on December 7, 2017 at the Peppermill Resort, Spa and Casino. A total of 29 companies including OnTrac were recognized at the event along with over 400 business and community guests in attendance. EDAWN Executive Vice President of Business Development Stan Thomas and City of Reno Bill Thomas presented an award on stage to OnTrac Chief Financial Officer Thomas Fischer and OnTrac Corporate Account Manager Erin Metscher.

EDAWN CEO and President Mike Kazmierski says, “2017 has been an exciting year of growth and positive change in the Greater Reno-Sparks area and most certainly for OnTrac. EDAWN’s annual event is all about new and expanded companies in our region this year. We are very excited to honor them at the celebration this year and look forward to seeing their company growth.”

Love the Zone You Ship

Understanding how to use zone shipping to your advantage will make you fall back in love with your shipping provider.

What is Zone Shipping?

Zone shipping is a common practice that shipping carriers use when creating fee structures for their customers. Rather than showing costs based on a map of US state borders, a zone map will divide regions and countries not specific to the state borders, but rather taking into consideration the surrounding megaregions (see megaregion map below.) Essentially, the cost of shipping is determined by how many zones a package must cross when traveling from its original origin.

Megaregions, or US population centers, are large metropolitan regions that share economic systems, transportation systems, and natural resources where population continues to grow. With distribution centers located in these largely populated areas, the distance a package travels might be a shorter distance to the destination than you think. OnTrac focuses resources in megaregions in order to be able to provide the very best advantages at the very best price.

Why is Zone Shipping important?

According to research done by The Colography Group, Inc., over 70% of packages stay within Zone 4, which is up to a 600-mile radius of the shipping origin. For regional carriers like OnTrac, who also service Zone 5, that percentage climbs to over 80%. In addition, the majority of these packages actually stay within Zone 2 (approximately 47.9% according to the below chart.) This means that the majority of packages shipped by companies stay within their general geographic region. Implementing a regional carrier, like OnTrac, will provide companies with a significant price savings with less fees and surcharges than the national carriers.

According to VISIBLE Supply Chain Management, “United States e-commerce sales reached $396 billion in 2016, and sales are estimated to grow beyond $684 billion by 2020; that’s nearly double the sales in just four years! Since zone shipping is used by all major shipping providers it is wise to fully understand how each carrier prices their zones. Newegg, the leading electronics-focused e-retailer in the United States, hosts the Eggie Awards gala each year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES.) OnTrac Expands by 800,000 Square Feet in 2017

2017 was a year of growth for OnTrac. With the opening of three new facilities across the Western United States, OnTrac has added nearly 800,000 square feet of additional warehouse space. OnTrac employees were joined by customers and the local Chamber of Commerce at each event for a celebration, ribbon cutting ceremony and facility tours.

In April 2017, OnTrac celebrated the grand opening of their second facility in Phoenix, Arizona and their third facility statewide. The second Phoenix location is over double in square footage to the first Phoenix facility. OnTrac General Manager Matthew Fagnano spoke to the company’s healthy growth plans by explaining that, “The Phoenix facility is designed to be an expandable system in terms of the material handling, which will allow OnTrac to continue to service the needs of the West Valley and grow with the community.” With over 200,000 square feet, OnTrac is planning the expansions well in advance for this Phoenix facility with an eye towards the future.

In June 2017, OnTrac welcomed to the public their biggest facility yet in Fontana, California. The nearly 600,000 square foot facility is over five times the size of the two previous OnTrac facilities in nearby Ontario. Laura Peterson, vice president of public relations and marketing says, “This facility is important to us. Not only is it our newest facility.  It is also our largest at just under 600,000 square feet. We have improved our square footage by five or six times and we've tripled the number of employees. And more exciting is that within the next year we plan on fully automating this building, which I believe will make us the first regional carrier to have a fully automated facility.” Being fully automated will give the facility the ability to move 35,000 packages an hour. By processing packages faster and minimizing time in the facility, the packages can be loaded and arrive at their destination faster.

The last Grand Opening of 2017 was in Vancouver, Washington. The Vancouver facility was built from the ground up and doubled in size from the previous facility. With over 160,000 square feet and roughly 60 employees, it is the largest presence OnTrac has had in the Northwest so far. This facility services the southwest Washington and Portland, Oregon area. The Vancouver facility is the second facility located in the state of Washington and is one of about 30 facilities throughout the OnTrac service region.

Digging into DIM Weight Pricing and Changes for 2018

While parcel dimensional weight and pricing have become standard practice in the shipping industry, the changes and increases in DIM charges are increasingly becoming a factor of concern for many shippers and their bottom line.

To some who may not be as familiar, DIM can appear to be just another way for carriers to squeeze more money out of shippers. However, DIM weight pricing can be advantageous and an overall simpler approach to calculating the cost of your packages with the carrier of your choice.

What is DIM Weight?

Dimensional weight reflects package density, which is the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight. A recent article in Cerasis defines parcel dimensional weight as the calculation of a package’s “volumized” weight, otherwise known as its cubic weight. The motivation behind the implementation of DIM weight came as a result of lost opportunities for carriers derived from shippers sending low-weight packages in big bulky boxes with excess packing. Therefore, carriers calculate the volume of a shipment and divide it by a parcel dimensional weight factor, which varies for each carrier.

As a shipper, you still want to know the package’s actual weight as the actual weight is compared to the DIM weight and the higher of the two is what the carrier will use when determining shipping costs.

Benefits of DIM Weight

The DIM weight model requires shippers to be more effective with how they package their own goods. By right-sizing your packaging, you can protect your items and potentially save money on shipping supplies and materials. Also, by making sure their packages take up as little space as possible, these businesses get better at planning and more accurately forecasting shipping budgets. With a simplification of shipping costs comes a simplified budget too.

Calculating Costs

As a shipper, it is wise to do your research to find the carrier that will partner with you on all of your needs and budgets. Each carrier will have different terms of service and options of billing. Also, each carrier’s dimensional weight divisor will vary.

To determine the dimensional weight, multiply the package length by the width by the height, in inches. The result is the cubic size of the package. For most National Carriers, the DIM weight divisor factor for domestic or ground shipments is 139. Regional Carrier OnTrac offers a dimensional weight factor of 166.

Changes to DIM Weight

Potentially one of the most impactful changes for 2018 comes with the announcement that FedEx will begin applying a dimensional weight (DIM) factor of 139 to all SmartPost packages, effective January 22, 2018. The change will align FedEx Express, Ground and SmartPost with that of UPS SurePost and UPS daily rates for all U.S. domestic services.

Looking at the chart below, furnished by PARCEL, while reviewing the examples shown, can help illustrate the impact of this change. Consider the following three SmartPost packages, all rated using the non-discounted FedEx SmartPost rates for Zone 5. The examples compare the 2017 non-dimensionalized rate to the 2018 dimensionalized rate.

The percentage cost increase is significant and illustrates how changes to DIM pricing are often more impactful than other changes. As it pertains to DIM Weight factors, this is one instance where greater is better. OnTrac offers a greater DIM weight divisor than national carriers, as well as, fewer fees and lower surcharges which can help keep costs in check and boost your bottom line.

OnTrac Ranked as 12th for Fastest Growing Company and Privately Held Company in Arizona

OnTrac received the high honor as the 12th Fastest Growing Company as well as the 12th Ranked Privately Held Company. Both distinctions were part of the annual Arizona Corporate Excellence (ACE) awards put on by the Phoenix Business Journal. The recognition event took place on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. The event brought together the largest private companies in Arizona that together generate revenues of over $15 billion per year, employ over 40,000 employees throughout the state, and over 56,000 employees worldwide.

The ACE awards is a nomination-based program that ranks by 2016 revenue and further company information such as the number of local and company-wide employees, a company profile, professional bio for the top local executive and the year that company was founded locally. Based on this information along with company interviews and further research by accounting firm CliftonLarsonAllen, the top private companies list is created. The goal of the ACE awards is to develop a sense of knowledge-sharing and community among private companies in Arizona and provide a means for executives at all levels to expand their professional networks.

OnTrac Surpasses Goal with 9,192 Can Donation to St. Vincent de Paul

OnTrac surpassed their company goal of donating 5,000 cans of food to the 10th annual 102.5 KNIX Million Can Crusade. The Valley’s biggest canned food drive supports St. Vincent de Paul in their efforts to feed hungry families this holiday season across the greater Phoenix area. In addition to the canned food donation from OnTrac, the logistics company also donated $1,500 at the event kickoff, which is equivalent to 15,000 cans of food. In total, OnTrac donated 24,192 cans of food.

In time for Thanksgiving, 102.5 KNIX announced on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 that the goal of collecting one million cans was reached. A grand total of 2,376,063 cans were donated and will fill St. Vincent de Paul’s community food pantries. From there, the cans will be placed into food boxes and delivered to hungry families throughout the Valley.

Customer Service Week Recap

Customer Service Week is internationally celebrated, and recognizes the importance of customer service, and the people who serve and support customers on a daily basis. Celebrating Customer Service Week provides a unique opportunity to celebrate the important role that customer service plays in each and every organization. Customer Service Week is celebrated annually during the first week of October, and provides a great opportunity to boost morale, motivation and team work.

On Monday October 2nd, OnTrac Customer Care transformed into a magical Disney wonderland. With themes ranging from Moana to Indiana Jones, OnTrac Customer Service Week provided many team building activities to boost morale as we head into the holiday season.

The week started off with OnTrac’s Annual Customer Service ping pong tournament, which continued throughout the week. This friendly competition takes place every year during Customer Service Week, and helps bring some friendly competition and teamwork. The OnTrac Customer Care Department was also able to participate in Mad Hatter croquet, an Under the Sea scavenger hunt, and even a pie in the face contest.

OnTrac Customer Service Week came to an end with a fun Disney dress up day where OnTrac employees got to come to work dressed as their favorite Disney character. The day ended with a delicious Matterhorn BBQ, along with a raffle ticket drawing for some fun prizes. OnTrac recognizes the valuable work customer care provides everyday, honoring them with customer service Week is one of the few ways to say thank you for the dedication and excellent service they provide.
