September is National Preparedness Month

Happy National PrepareAthon Day!  It’s hard to believe that October is approaching and the holidays are right around the corner.  Cyber Monday (online sales that happen the first Monday after Thanksgiving) and Green Monday (usually the second Monday in December) offer up additional marketing opportunities for e-commerce stores. 2015 online sales are expected to break the previous year’s record in 2014, which means another monster peak season for OnTrac.

Not only is September the beginning of fall and the eve of the busy peak season at work, but September is also National Preparedness Month for you and your family’s personal safety at home during any disaster situation.   Everyone is extremely busy with work schedules and it is very important to take a few minutes every day to make sure that you and your families are prepared in case of a disaster.  Natural disaster can occur at any time, at work or home.  There are no schedules or time frames that such events will take place, which is why a plan is always needed.  Today is a day dedicated to taking action to increase community preparedness and resilience.

Below is a list of tips from the National Crime Prevention Council to prepare for what could be the most tragic time in your life or your family’s lives at home or at work.

  • Develop a communications plan for your family. Choose someone who does not live with you (preferably an out-of-town relative or friend) whom you and other family members can contact to check on each other in the event that you are separated during a disaster. Carry that person’s contact information in your purse or wallet.
  • Make sure children know their last name, phone number, address, and number for the out-of-town contact person.
  • Make sure every member of your family knows an alternate route home.
  • If family members can’t get home, designate a meeting place.
  • Know your community’s emergency evacuation route.
  • Learn how to shut off utilities such as gas, electricity, and water.
  • Assemble an emergency preparedness kit that will allow your family to camp out for three days. Assume you’ll be without electricity and running water.
  • Store your emergency supplies in sealed containers such as plastic tubs - taped shut.
  • Keep cash on hand; automated teller machines won’t be working if the power is out.
  • Learn CPR and first aid to help with medical emergencies.
  • Learn about emergency plans for your children’s school or daycare center.
  • If you’re a teen, find out whether your school has a group of student volunteers to help out in emergency situations. If not, offer to help start such a group. Or start a School Crime Watch.
  • Learn about your company’s emergency plan. Practice the plan. Learn exit routes.
  • Work with your Neighborhood Watch or civic association to create a disaster preparedness plan.

On behalf of OnTrac, we would like to wish you a safe and successful peak and holiday season.

OnTrac_Employee Spotlight

For this week’s employee spotlight, we are pleased to introduce Leon Shaw Jr. 2015 marks his 27th year with OnTrac. In 1988, Leon started working as a Same-Day Messenger Driver in the Los Angeles region as one of the first drivers for the company. The main requirements of his job would be to run linehauls to Kettleman City, San Diego and the LAX Airport. Vice President of Risk Assessment Mark Cronkrite said, “Wherever he was needed he did the job, no questions asked. He worked a lot of hours for a long time, and his dedication to the company helped build this business.”

Leon is an influential part of OnTrac history and helped shape the company to what it is today. In 1997, Leon retired from his driving career to pursue a sorting position at the Commerce Facility in California. This year marks his 18th year sorting at OnTrac. Commerce General Manager Dennis Crosby said, “He’s a dedicated employee who would do anything to protect the success of the company.” When Leon isn’t sorting, you might catch him following up on his favorite basketball team. He’s a big Los Angeles Lakers fan. Thank you Leon for your commitment, dedication and service! We’re happy to have you a part of the OnTrac team.

At OnTrac, we take pride in creating lasting relationships with our customers. During the month of August, we were fortunate to participate in two of our customer’s events. Not only are we contributing to a great cause, but we have fun while we do it.

OnTrac_Chicago Title MAW

2015 marks the 23rd year that Chicago Title Insurance Company hosts an annual softball tournament in Sunnyvale to raise awareness and funding for Make-A-Wish, Greater Bay Area, and the seventh year that OnTrac has participated. The tournament was held over three days in early August. There were 21 teams that went head to head for the 2015 winning title. Chicago Title Vice President of Operations Valeri Huxley shares, “To date, we have raised over $850,000 for Make-A-Wish, Greater Bay Area and we have such a great time doing it! This year our goal was to raise $50,000.” Congratulations Chicago Title on creating an event that not only supports a great cause, but allows each supporter to have fun while participating!

OnTrac_Oakmont 2015 Football Cleanup

The second event that OnTrac was a part of this month was the 2015 Football Stadium Cleanup at Oakmont High School of Roseville, California. We were able to help keep the students and parents hydrated, while they cleaned up the football stadiums during their Saturday. We wish the Oakmont Vikings a great school year and 2015 football season!

OnTrac welcomed guests from the city of Fremont to the Hayward packaging facility, named for the original city it was located in, on Monday, July 20th, 2015. OnTrac Pacific Regional General Manager Mike Wynant, General Manager of the Hayward facility Michael O’Mahony, and David Anderson, Manager of the Hayward facility, guided Fremont city officials through the hub facility. The guests from the city of Fremont included:

  • Councilmember Rick Jones
  • Economic Development Director Kelly Kline
  • Economic Development Advisory Commissioner Sheena Chang
  • Economic Development Intern David Ho

City of Fremont Officials

OnTrac was excited to initiate conversations with the city of Fremont to discuss OnTrac’s history specific to the Hayward facility and share our mutual goals for community involvement within the city. The BART station expansion, proximity to various restaurant options and access to multiple highways was discussed as benefits to employers and contributing factors for Fremont developing into a major employment center. Overall the goal of the meeting was for both parties to meet face-to-face, begin building a relationship and discuss ways in which to support each other.

Councilmember Rick Jones said, “The City of Fremont appreciates the opportunity to meet directly with business managers to plan for employment growth, and to ensure that the City’s innovation ecosystem remains strong. OnTrac is a critical logistics player in that ecosystem, and we expect that the company will flourish along with Fremont’s other advanced industries.”

OnTrac Pacific Regional General Manager Mike Wynant commented on the meeting, “At OnTrac, we strongly believe in our responsibility as a corporate citizen in the city where we operate. Our goal is to make a positive impact on the city of Fremont and building a relationship through our meeting today is a great step in the right direction.”

The Hayward facility’s name is based on its original location in Hayward, CA and moved to the city of Fremont on June 15, 2012. It is the second largest OnTrac sorting facility and operates as a regional hub, which helps to promote proper sorting and reduces double handling packages.

Let OnTrac Help You Recycle for Earth Day - And Receive an Eco-Tote!

Posted on Apr 5, 2010 11:32:00 AM

You've probably noticed that "go green" messages are everywhere these days.  They are apparent in the media, politics, fashion, technology and even your local grocery markets.  With a million messages coming at us from all sides, it can be easy to get overwhelmed by the ubiquity of these green advertisements and lose sight of their true meaning.

While it's easy to be inundated by these messages, it's also simple to begin making a positive impact.  Sometimes it's helpful to understand the big picture by setting smaller personal goals.  Even the act of recycling can eliminate waste problems in underdeveloped countries.  Eighty percent of our discarded mobile phones, computers, printers and other electronic devices end up being thrown away.  According to PBS and Frontline, that waste gets exported to third-world countries, like Ghana, where it turns into an environmental nightmare.

The truth is that every single thing we do every day has an impact on the planet - good or bad.  The good news is that, as an individual, you have the power to control your choices and the impact you create.  For this reason, OnTrac is offering an opportunity for you to recycle your old cell phones so that they don't end up in a landfill somewhere.

In conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency's Cell Phone Recycling Week occurring April 5 - 11, 2010, OnTrac encourages you to recycle your old mobile phones and PDA devices.  Recycling cell phones helps the environment by saving energy and keeping usable materials out of landfills.  Cell phones and PDAs are made of precious metals, copper and plastics - all of which require energy to mine and manufacture.  Recycling conserves these materials so that they can be turned into new products.  Recycling 1 million cell phones can save enough energy to power 185 US homes with electricity for one year.

OnTrac is offering to recycle and or dispose of these devices properly per the standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency.  The majority of these devices are recycled depending on material type.  No electronic waste goes into landfills or incinerators and no electronic scrap is shipped to underdeveloped countries.  Additionally, all personal, corporate or any other non-operating system data is removed and destroyed from the device.

These cell phones are sent to cell phone recycling companies like Full Circle Wireless, Pace Butler and Cell Phone Cycle where they are recycled, reused or turned into cash to help support charitable causes like the American Diabetes Association, Children's Miracle Work, the Coalition Against Domestic Violence and many more organizations.  The funds have also been used to help the following causes:

  •  Sending Missionaries to China
  •  Treating malnourished children in Asia after the 2004 Tsunami
  •  Building new homes for low-income families
  •  Providing overseas military men and women with pre-paid phone calling cards

All you have to do is send us an email at Marketing@OnTrac.com and tell us you'd like to recycle your old phone.  We will take care of the rest by sending you a free waybill and polybag to send us your phone.  OnTrac will not receive any profits or credits for recycling or collecting these devices, but will ship the cell phones to the appropriate destinations at no cost to you.  We will handle all the shipping services, proper salvage methods and all cost involved in the recycling of these electronic devices.  Additionally, every person who recycles their mobile device through OnTrac will receive their own Eco-Friendly bag which can be used and reused as grocery bags, for school books, gym bags, shopping and more.

Also, tell us what you do to "be green", whether it's cleaning up neighborhood trash on your evening walks, taking quick showers or volunteer work at the local park.  Each person who posts a comment will receive an Eco-Tote Bag from OnTrac.

Embracing a greener lifestyle isn't just about eating organic foods and turning the lights off when you leave the room.  It's much bigger than that.  So, take a small step to do something good for the earth by allowing OnTrac to help you recycle your old cell phones during the EPA's Cell Phone Recycling week.
